Why do our schools in the US (grades 1-12) lag so much behind other countries in terms of math and science?
Why do our schools in the US (grades 1-12) lag so much behind other countries in terms of math and science?
Is it because we don’t stress the importance of these subjects or are students not interested in math and science?
Should there be a mandatory credits needed to graduate from high schools? Like 3-4 years of math, 3-4 years of basic science?

Yes. I believe that science and math are subjects that should be drilled into people. These are key to the future and to the understanding of ourselves and the universe.
Don’t forget grammar. Have you seen how the school kids spell on here? Most cannot even form a proper sentence.

It’s primarily because as a culture we are lazy. When the teachers begin to be more demanding of the students, the parents call in to the school and complain.

You are right that we are really behind other countries in math and science education. I think what all the other posters said are right, but also because, at least in my state, they stress ENGLISH ENGLISH ENGLISH ENGLISH . . . math and science are kind of pushed to the side. I think it is a little stupid that math and science are stressed less than english. What does the world revolve around? Math and Science (not english)!

If you watch documentaries on the subject you’ll quickly notice that in those other countries, schools are not for socialization, they are filled with rigorous academics from start to finish AND parents in those other countries put significant emphasis on educational achievement whereas we do not here in the US. Also, excuses are not as tolerated elsewhere.
