My math teacher says teachers should never assign their own subject as punishment. Is that true?

Math Help

He assigns punishment sentences instead of giving us math problems. He says that’s what experts say but didn’t tell us why.

Actually your math teacher is a very smart person and is very right.

The reasoning behind it is this. Anything that is used as a punishment will leave a feeling of resentment against it due to the association.

If he gives you math as a punishment you will begin to hate math because you will always associate it with a punishment and not the wonderful thing that it is and never learn it properly.

negative reinforcement only works to a point. Any consequences should be related to the infraction. I cant see where I would assign math problems or sentences as a form of punishment. Thats one step removed from mindless standards.

His “rule” is his creation. I’d like to see some research that says this. doubt it exists.

The only punishment teachers are suppose to give is what is written in the schools discipline policy.

As an English teacher, I must therefore object to his giving a writing assignment as punishment.

I actually agree with him —- mostly.

I don’t want my students to associate any school subject with punishment. Learning should be exciting and rewarding. Real discipline is more than punishment, and actually very difficult to create.
