For all you math whizzes; How are volleyball and math related?
Math Help
I need to write a three page paper on how a sport is related to math. What I need to write about needs to be more along the lines of, say, the calculations done in one’s head to measure the timing to hit the ball, or any sort of applied math/science, rather then the obvious, “the scoring is math related.”.

when the volleyball is struck it’s path up and down to the other side is in the shape of a parabola. this is due to the effects of gravity. the time it takes to rise to it’s peak is the same time it takes to fall to its base on the other side. Furthermore, the initial velocity right after the ball is struck and final velocity when it reaches other side at equal height are the same
the velocity can be calculated with this equation v = v (initial) + (1/2)g(t ^2)
where v = velocity (speed with direction), v (initial) is speed at which the ball leaves players hands, g = gravitational acceleration (-9.81 m/s^2 on Earth), t = time
air friction is not taken into consideration here
the distance the ball travels horizontally can be calculated with this equation
d = d (initial) + v(initial)t + (1/2)g(t^2)
where d is distance, d (initial) is zero in this case, v(initial) & g & t same as above

Volleyball and math are both fun. But I never did a calculation in my head while playing volleyball.
