For a community college math instructor is it required to stay on the campus all day?

Math Help

I am applying for a full-time math teaching position at a community college. I am also working full time doing research. If I obtain a teaching position at this college do I have to be there all day or just when I teach class and meet with students ? I would like to do both jobs.

I would like to hear from those who teach at the community college level. What’s your daily schedule like ?

you will have office hours (certain # per week), plus committee work. Should add up to about 30 hours a week on campus, although it may be 5 days. You will probably get an office, so try to do some of your research there.

the only time you must spend on campus outside of your classroom is when you hold office hours twice a week. This is a time for students to come and ask you questions one on one. Many professors also choose to hold these hours by appointment only. Consult with the policies of the specific school in which you would like to teach at.

The answer will depend on which state you are in and probably which college within the state system.

In the community college here, you would teach approximately 16 to 18 hours per week over 4 days scheduled between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. or over the Internet. You’d hold a minimum of 5 office hours per week and others by appointment. You might spend some time in math lab. You would be expected to attend committee meetings (and possibly participate in a Regional Association Self-Study). You would be expected to participate in personal and professional development that would enhance your skills. While Friday or Weekend classes are unlikely unless you volunteer, you would be expected to be available on a predictable schedule on Fridays, or you could be off campus attending approved events such as meetings of your discipline’s state-wide association. The commitment theoretically averages out to 30 hours on-campus per week but more realistically may be 25 hours on campus with other working hours off campus.

In this state, community college instructors are expected to be student oriented and to do what is necessary to help their students to be academically successful.
