What math technique to use to solve problem?

I have a math class and need to figure out the answer to this problem. (It’s a story…so here goes) Two people are hiding in the tops of two trees at the base of a cliff. One lowers his backpack on a rope and measures how tall the tree is, which is 35 meters. It is also 17 meters from the bottom of the cliff to the bottom of the tree and the cliff is 30 meters high. They are going to cut down the tree, have it fall onto the top of the cliff , ride the tree down and jump on top of the cliff. Did his tree hit the cliff? Explain how you know.
